What causes dental stains?

There are two types of dental stains: external and internal. Internal, or intrinsic stains, can be due to too much fluoride exposure or long-term antibiotic use. Direct trauma to the tooth can also cause internal stains to surface.

External, or extrinsic stains, are often due to consuming certain foods or drinks--like coffee, red wine and berries--which can stain enamel. Tobacco use can also cause nasty and stubborn external stains. Additionally, as we age it’s normal for teeth to dull and yellow.

What are my whitening options?

When it comes to teeth whitening you have two options: at-home whitening or in-office whitening. You can opt for commercial whitening kits from your local drugstore. But if you are looking for a stronger and more effective whitening experience, you’ll want to get your at-home whitening from your Jenkintown cosmetic dentist.

But if you are looking to get a significantly brighter smile in just an hour, you’ll want to consider getting in-office whitening. No other option produces faster or better results. You could have a smile that’s up to eight shades whiter!

How does teeth whitening work?

Professional teeth whitening from your Jenkintown dentists uses either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide gel. These active ingredients come in concentrations of 10 to 22 percent--significantly higher than commercial whitening kits that only contain concentration levels of 3 to 6 percent.

During in-office whitening, the gel is painted over the front of your teeth. Then a dental light is directed over the teeth to activate the gel and speed up the whitening process. While there are no special light beams involved with professional at-home whitening, our custom-made trays will ensure that you get an evenly brilliant smile quickly.

Impressions are taken of your teeth, from which custom-made whitening trays are made. The whitening gel is placed into these trays, and you’ll need to wear them everyday for a designated amount of time. It can take weeks to see the full effects, but this option is less expensive than an in-office whitening visit.

Limberakis Family Dentistry would be happy to help you achieve that glowing, vibrant smile. Say goodbye to pesky stains and yellowing and enjoy renewed confidence in your brilliant smile. Call our Jenkintown, PA dental office to schedule your first session today!
