Give your child the best chance at a cavity-free smile with a little help from dental sealants.

Every child is prone to cavities, especially if they aren’t properly caring for their teeth and gums. From a diet high in sugar to poor brushing habits, these are just some of the reasons your child might be at a higher risk for cavities. Fortunately, our Jenkintown, PA, family dentists Drs. Cary and Jonathan Limberakis offer a simple preventive option that could reduce your child’s risk of decay.

What are dental sealants?

This transparent or tooth-colored coating is applied to your child’s teeth to prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped in areas that are more challenging to clean, resulting in cavities. Along with maintaining good oral hygiene habits at home (this means brushing, flossing and eating a smile-friendly diet) and visiting your Jenkintown, PA, dentist every six months for checkups, dental sealants are another great way to reduce your child’s risk for cavities.

What teeth can get dental sealants?

Your child’s molars, or back teeth, are the ones that will most likely be getting dental sealants. This is for two reasons,

  1. Back teeth can be a little more difficult to brush and floss as thoroughly and effectively as easy-to-reach front teeth
  2. The grooves, crevices and ridges that make up the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth can easily trap plaque and food, increasing the likelihood for cavities

By placing sealants on back teeth as soon as they emerge, our dental team can reduce your child’s chances of developing cavities.

How are dental sealants applied?

Getting dental sealants is an easy process. Sealants can easily be placed during your child’s next checkup.

After your child’s teeth have been thoroughly cleaned and examined we will apply a special solution over the chewing surfaces of the tooth. This solution will make it easier for the sealant to stick to the tooth. The solution is rinsed off and the tooth is dried. Next, the sealant is painted onto the back teeth where our dentist will then harden the sealant into place. The process is quick and completely non-invasive!
